Edgar Oliveira is a visual artist whose practice encompasses photography, video, and installation, with a strong appreciation for the challenge of site-specific work. He began his artistic journey at MauMaus, Centro de Contaminação Visual in Lisbon (1996), where he had his first contact with photography and art. He then moved to London, where he completed a degree in Fine Arts at the University of Sussex (2004). For eight years, he was a member of the Area10 collective, where he developed several collaborations with artists from various disciplines, nationalities, and age groups, also creating his own multidisciplinary installations, including “Your Space Has Been Taken” (2005), “Times of Play” (2006), and “Please Wash Your Hands” (2008). He collaborated with Living Structure (Immersive Theater) and Psychological Art Circus (Private Theatre), where he had the opportunity to explore the creative and visual aspects of his practice in a performative context.
After returning to Lisbon, he co-founded Roundabout.lx, where he worked for eight years, creating an open space where sharing and collaboration between artists was possible. In Lisbon, he developed his work with site-specific interventions and public space projects. Among them, “Capitalizizisme” (2013-2016), “País Pandza” (2015), and “Bairro das Ex-Colônias” (2019). In recent years, alongside his artistic practice, he has dedicated himself to teaching through photography workshops for children, focusing on promoting the freedom to be and exist, developing their vision, and fostering an interest in photography.
Edgar lives and works between Lisbon and Sintra, where he has established his studio and workspace amidst nature, aiming to create an environment conducive to reflection and creation. He is transforming his land into a sustainable and self-sufficient space where art, nature, and community can coexist. In this context, Edgar applies the teachings of permaculture, observing and learning from nature.
